Jean-Maurice Raffault: Chinon Rouge Le Puy AOC

Chinon Rouge Le Puy AOC
- Varieties: 100% Cabernet Franc
- Type: Red
- Region: Chinon, Anjou-Saumur, Loire Valley, France
- Alcohol Level: 14.0%
Wine Description:
From our best clayey and chalky hillside (1ha70), exposed to the south, grape (100% Cabernet Franc) is harvested down, for a first time, in mid-august in order to only keep the ripest grapes.
After a long maceration of at least 28 days, the malolactic fermentation of the wine takes place in new and 1 year old double barrels. The maturation, during 18 months on lees, is an important overall factor process for the ageing of the wine that smoothes its important structure.
These plots are located on the south slope of one of the "Puys du Chinonais" (small mountains that overlook the valley of the Vienne and the Loire), where many windmills were erected. One can distinguish the castle of Saumur at more than 20 km. A vast network of former tuffeau quarries also extends below.
Tasting Note:
Appearance: rich ruby color.
Nose: The aroma of wine is revealed by notes of black fruits, blackberries, spices and minerals.
Palate: The taste of the wine is soft, harmonious, elegant, with a smooth texture, shades of black fruits and toasts, pleasant sourness in a long aftertaste.
